Panel on Big Data and eScience

Science is data and there is wealth of data in each of the sciences. Labs, instruments, and tools collect data relentlessly. Add to this the sensors, various medical and other equipment. This is the new age of scientific data-voluminous, voracious, and very insightful with predictive potential. Sensors everywhere, infinite storage, and clouds of processors have transformed our ability to capture, warehouse, and understand massive amounts of data. This is changing the face of science, medicine, business, and technology. In the era of big data, more isn’t just more. More is different. With the emergence of a new approach to science in the internet age, it is being argued that a theoretical revision in the scientific method be made where all of the computational steps by which scientists draw conclusions are reveled. We should include a new branch, that of the computational approach to science and that is e-Science. And e-Science repairs a paradigm shift, and the addition of a third branch of the sciences the Open Data Paradigm. Chris Anderson pronounced “The End of Theory: The Data Deluge Makes the Scientific Method Obsolete” in the Wired Magazine in 2008. Turing Award winner Jim Gray called this data- intensive science “Fourth Paradigm of Science”.

This new phenomenon is all about how science and data sciences are now intricately intertwined and work in tandem. Do we have the infrastructure (cyber infrastructure) and tools to store, organize, analyze, visualize, and understand the data, scientists have collected? Is the older database model approach adequate to discover and manage the data in the Big Data scale? How do we cross-index it with the literature and archives? Has scientific communication acquired new methods and models? Is it time to change paradigm scientific communication that evolved with the “Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society” in 1665? How do we approach the challenges of integrating data and published literature, or data centres and libraries in the campuses, under the cyber infrastructure model? More importantly have we developed the mind-set, methodologies and the approach that is required / demanded of the new science of science? That is the big question this panel will deliberate on. The panelists are:
